Get the reading love back!

As quick digital content has become easily available, reading has faced a major setback. People complain that they just can’t sit down with a book, and it is not a good sign! So, if you would like to get out of the slump, here are 10 ways to rekindle your love for reading.

Start small and pick stories

Usually, reading a novel feels like a big commitment that people are not ready for. So, to remove the ‘heavy’ decision of picking a novel, just swap it out for an easier story-like book. It will be a quick read and will make you feel better about your reading pace.

Re-read a favourite

All of us have a particular book that we loved from the start and can read all over again. So, pick that book up from the dusty shelf and re-read it to experience the same joy all over again.

Buy new books

Often when we don’t feel like reading, it is because we feel there is nothing ‘new’ to read. And buying some new books could actually give you the perfect dopamine rush and make you want to feel the new pages, appreciate the beautiful covers, and read!

Read what you like

Another way to rekindle the reading habit is to read what you like. Don’t fixate on reading a Russian classic just because ‘Bookstagram’ said it is the new rage. Instead, read what feels right and see how well your brain responds.

Recreate your reading space

Sometimes, the motivation to read also comes up from the space in which you are reading. Set your spot on the bed or near the study table, add an aesthetic reading lamp to it, and buy some annotation tabs and highlighters to make it look appealing.

Set a reading goal

If soft rekindling doesn’t work, it won’t be the worst idea to force yourself into it! Try to force yourself to read about 5-10 pages every day and see how your mind reacts to the new habit.

Book clubs

If reading has been difficult lately, you can consider joining a book club. And if going somewhere just to ‘read’ sounds tedious, there are plenty of online book clubs that will come to your rescue!

Try audiobooks

If you feel the reading slump has come because your eyes are way too tired at the end of the day, try audiobooks and see if it makes a difference. Listen to a book while on your way to work, or while cooking dinner for yourself.

Mix up the reads

If you have always been a novel person, try changing into poetry. Or if you have always been a physical book person, try reading through your Kindle! Sometimes, mixing things up is the way to go.

Don’t let your phone distract you

While this seems very cliche, distractions from social media and the ringing of calls are often the reason why you are way too tired to pick up a book. So, try to silence the phone every once in a while and sit leisurely while reading a book.
