CHENNAI:

Labour unrest

at Samsung‘s plant near Chennai escalated on Thursday with a district court hearing the company’s petition against protesting workers. The workers’ union is also considering legal action against the South Korean electronics giant.
The company filed for a

temporary injunction

order to stop protests and agitations within a 500-meter radius of its plant at the Kancheepuram additional district court on Sept 12.

It claimed that the protests were disrupting operations.

There are apprehensions among labour department officials that protests could spread to other

electronics manufacturing

units in the region, if state govt does not intervene and bring the strike to an end, as it did in the case of a Foxconn unit about two years ago. “The protest is happening at the makeshift tent which is already some distance away from the plant and there is no violation,” J Prathaban, advocate for the labour union, told TOI. The court on Thursday urged the management to hold conciliatory talks with the union to end the dispute amicably, according to him. The court order is expected on Friday.

Hundreds of workers at the Samsung consumer electronics plant at Sunguvarchatram have been on strike since Sept 9 under the banner Samsung India Employees Union . Sources at Samsung India, on a condition of anonymity, said the impact of strike on the production is minimal.
Meanwhile, a senior labour union functionary told TOI they are considering legal action for registration of the union. “We are thinking of approaching the Madras high court to direct the registrar of trade unions to register,” the person mentioned above said. The company has objected to the use ‘Samsung’ in the union’s name.
Various labour unions held solidarity protests for Samsung’s workers . Meanwhile, taking to X, BJP leader and former Telangana governor Tamilisai Soundararajan said that as long as the Communists are part of the DMK govt they will show ‘red flag’ to all the industries in TN. She further said the CM doesn’t require a foreign trip to solve this issue.
