Since 1947, Mehdi Hasan Tailors, a family-owned business in Aligarh, has crafted custom sherwanis for some of India’s most influential figures, from Presidents and Prime Ministers to Bollywood stars. Known for their dedication to tradition and high-quality craftsmanship, the tailors have created a legacy that combines regal elegance with expert tailoring. Now, a video doing the rounds on social media by Pritha Dasmahapatra (@tiptopped on Instagram) , who specialises in Indian textiles, has put the quaint tailor shop under the spotlight once again.

Established at Tasveer Mahal in Aligarh, Mehdi Hasan Tailors began with a mission to honor and preserve the sherwani’s cultural heritage. Their focus on detailed, bespoke tailoring quickly garnered recognition, elevating them to national prominence. This commitment to excellence also inspired the creation of the “Aligarh” style kurta-pajama, a relaxed straight-leg fit, celebrating the region’s rich fashion legacy.

Abdul Kalam, Pranab Mukherjee, Ram Nath Kovind, and more, along with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, numerous Chief Ministers, MPs, and Supreme Court judges. A Bollywood favourite
Their reputation extends to Bollywood as well, where stars such as Saif Ali Khan, Javed Akhtar, Raj Babbar, and Majrooh Sultanpuri have sported their sherwanis. Notably, Mehdi Hasan Tailors crafted 175 sherwanis for former President Zakir Hussain, which he wore proudly throughout his political career.
