As Donald Trump swept 2024 US presidential elections securing victory in most of the swing states, concerns regarding Republican’s stand on key policy issues have sparked concerns.
From immigration to abortion, Trump has attracted polarising opinions from experts across the nation.
Here’s a look at his stance on 10 key issues:
Immigration
Immigration remains a top priority for Trump, just as it was in 2016 when his “Build the wall” slogan became iconic. While border crossings reached record levels at the end of 2023, they have decreased this election year. Trump has pledged to seal the border by completing the wall and ramping up enforcement.
He has also promised the largest mass deportations in US history, with his vice-presidential pick, JD Vance, stating they would start by removing a million people. However, experts warn that such large-scale deportations would face major legal and logistical hurdles, potentially slowing economic growth. Additionally, Trump has proposed ending birthright citizenship for the children of undocumented immigrants, though this policy would also face significant legal challenges.
Ukraine and Nato
Trump advocates for an isolationist foreign policy, seeking to withdraw the US from conflicts around the world. He has pledged to end the war in Ukraine “within 24 hours” through a negotiated settlement with Russia, a plan that Democrats argue would embolden Vladimir Putin.
On Nato, Trump believes that countries failing to meet the recommended 2% of GDP on defense spending should lose the security benefits that come with membership.
Israel-Gaza war
“His leadership will again be key to keeping our Alliance strong. I look forward to working with him again to advance peace through strength through Nato,” chief Mark Rutte said.
Trump has positioned himself as a strong supporter of Israel, frequently condemning pro-Palestinian activists on U.S. college campuses. However, he has also criticized Israel’s handling of the ongoing conflict. Trump claimed that the war wouldn’t have happened if he were president, though he hasn’t provided specifics on how he would end it.
During his presidency, Trump angered Palestinians by moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem and reversing the position on Israeli settlements in the West Bank, no longer labeling them as illegal despite their violation of international law.
Abortion
This was the first presidential election since the Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to abortion in 2022, a decision influenced by the three judges appointed by Trump during his presidency. While Democrats have used the ruling to rally supporters in the face of increasing abortion restrictions, Trump has struggled to find a clear stance on the issue.
Trump has consistently said states should have the freedom to decide their own abortion laws, but in recent weeks, he has tried to balance a more moderate position with the need to appease his conservative base. He faced backlash after criticizing Florida’s six-week abortion ban, but also stated he would oppose a ballot measure in the state to protect abortion rights. During the presidential debate, Trump reiterated that he would not sign a national abortion ban into law.
Taxes
Trump has outlined a series of planned tax cuts. He aims to extend the tax cuts he implemented in 2017, which are set to expire next year. This overhaul, the largest in decades, aimed to simplify the tax code and encourage growth, with the biggest cuts benefiting businesses and the wealthy—measures Democrats have called to reverse.
Trump also seeks to reduce the corporate tax rate further, potentially lowering it to 15%. He has proposed making tipped income tax-free, a measure that has also gained support from his opponent, Kamala Harris. Additionally, Trump advocates for abolishing the tax on Social Security payments, a move that would benefit retirees but could significantly impact the Social Security fund.
Crime
Trump has promised to dismantle drug cartels, eliminate gang violence, and rebuild Democratic-run cities, which he claims are plagued by crime. His Republican platform focuses on restoring safety by boosting police departments and shielding officers from “frivolous lawsuits.”
Democrats argue that his pledge to pardon hundreds of January 6 rioters contradicts his law-and-order stance. They also highlight FBI data showing a 6% drop in violent crime and a 13% decrease in murders in 2023 as evidence that crime is already on the decline.
Climate
As president, Trump rolled back numerous environmental protections, including limits on carbon emissions from power plants and vehicles, and safeguards for federal waterways. This time, he is again promising to reduce regulations, especially to support the American car industry.
Trump has repeatedly criticized electric vehicles, vowing to reverse Biden’s goals for transitioning to cleaner cars. He has also long opposed offshore wind farms, pledging to stop their development if re-elected.
Healthcare
In his list of top priorities, Trump has promised not to cut Medicare, the federal health insurance program for seniors. While president, he unsuccessfully attempted to dismantle the Affordable Care Act (ACA), President Barack Obama’s landmark legislation that expanded insurance to millions. Despite continued criticism of the ACA, which remains popular, Trump stated in March on Truth Social that he would not seek to undermine it.
Recently, Trump also called for taxpayer-funded fertility treatments, although it’s unclear whether such a costly proposal has the backing of Republicans in Congress.
