BAREILLY: Two

farmers

of Patei Nasir village under Rajpura limits of UP’s Sambhal district were booked for

betting

on the outcome of the Lok Sabha election result in the

constituency

. An

FIR

under section 13 of the

Public Gambling Act

was lodged against the two for placing a Rs 2.3 lakh bet on their “favourite poll candidates” .
The two farmers were booked following a complaint by their neighbour, Veopal Singh.

A “contract letter” on govt stamp paper was prepared on Wednesday with the signatures of two witnesses. It stated: “If the BJP candidate wins, Niresh Yadav will give Rs 2.3 lakh to Vijendra Singh Yadav and vice versa.” The witnesses were their friends Dinesh Kumar and Pyare Lal.
The betting deed was attested through a notary. Veopal, in his complaint, also mentioned that “the bet placed by Vijendra and Niresh is threatening to disturb peace in the village, as people are engaging in verbal arguments about the possible winner.”
He also expressed concern that promoting such practices could prompt more people to take to gambling.
