Amidst escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, reports emerged of three anti-Putin groups crossing into Russia, engaging in clashes with Russian troops in the Belgorod region. Unverified videos shared on Telegram purportedly showed the Freedom of Russia Legion entering Russia, with armored vehicles seen entering villages along the border. One video captured gunfire from Ukraine-based anti-Russia fighters. The incidents occurred just days before Russia’s planned presidential election, prompting Russia’s Defense Ministry to claim that up to 60 “Ukrainian terrorists” and several military vehicles were “destroyed” in the attempted incursions. However, locals on social media claimed one village in Belgorod was now under “liberation forces’ control”. Ukraine’s military denied involvement in the cross-border raids, while Russia accused Ukraine of launching 25 drone attacks across its territory, though these were reportedly thwarted. Meanwhile, videos emerged showing several Russian oil facilities on fire, adding to the turmoil. In another development, an IL-76 Russian military plane crashed in the Ivano-Frankivsk region, east of Moscow, due to an engine fire, with unverified videos circulating on social media showing the aircraft engulfed in flames. The full-scale invasion of Ukraine, initiated by Russian President Putin, has now entered its third year, making it the biggest war in Europe since World War II, with no signs of ending soon.
