BSP declares another list of candidates for Lok Sabha elections in UP

LUCKNOW: The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on Sunday released the lists of candidates for Lok Sabha elections in UP. The candidates for 25 parliamentary seats, out of 80, in UP were declared by the party on Sunday, including candidates for eight seats that would go to polls in the first phase on April 19.
The eight seats are Saharanpur, Kairana, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Nagina (SC), Moradabad, Rampur and Pilibhit.

The party has drawn candidates from every caste and religious community that was dominant in the Lok Sabha constituency for which it declared the candidate on Sunday, instead of “over depending” on any particular community for the selection of candidates. The party has also fielded women candidates, Sarika Singh Baghel from Etawah (SC) and Puja Amrohi from Agra (SC).

Most of the names that made it to the official list of the candidates released by the party were already declared by the district units of the party, over a period of time, as the probable candidates for the Lok Sabha elections in UP.
In Saharanpur, BSP has fielded Majid Ali after the central leadership of the party decided to not repeat the sitting MP, Haji Fazlur Rahman as the candidate from the seat. Ali had joined BSP in 2009 and contested the 2017 assembly election from Deoband on BSP’s ticket. In September 2021, he had quit BSP to join Azad Samaj Party. But a few months back, he joined BSP again.

In Kairana, first-timer Shreepal Singh will be the candidate while an OBC leader, Dara Singh Prajapati will contest the Muzaffarnagar seat. He has been associated with the party since 2009.
The former national general secretary of RLD, Vijendra Singh, who joined BSP recently has been declared the candidate from Bijnor. The party has not repeated its sitting MP Malook Nagar as the candidate from the seat.
In Rampur, Zishan Khan will be the candidate. He has been with the party for over a decade and has held many responsibilities for the party at the local level. He will contest elections for the first time. Meanwhile, Irfan Saifi will contest from Moradabad and Anis Ahmed Khan alias Phool Babu from Pilibhit as BSP candidates.
Saifi has been contesting urban local body polls in Thakurdwara as an independent for over a decade. In the urban local body polls in May 2023, he won the chairman election for Thakurdwara Nagar Palika which he contested as an independent.
In the reserved seat of Nagina, a lawyer, Surendra Pal Singh has been declared the candidate by the party.
Girish Chandra Jatav is the party MP from Nagina. He has been fielded from Bulandshahr this time. Both Nagina and Bulandshahr are seats reserved for SCs. In Amroha, Dr Mujahid Hussain will contest the elections as the candidate from BSP. The party had suspended its Amroha MP, Danish Ali in December for anti-party acts. He has joined Congress and will contest from Amroha as Congress candidate.
In Sambhal, BSP has fielded Shaulat Ali as the candidate. He was the Samajwadi Party MLA from Moradabad Dehat in 1996. In 2012 assembly elections, he contested the Kundarki assembly seat as the Congress candidate but lost. In Aonla, Abid Ali will be the candidate for BSP. He has recently joined BSP after quitting Samajwadi Party.
The other candidates declared by the party were Dodram Verma from Shahjahanpur (SC), Pravin Bansal from Baghpat, Devvrat Tyagi from Meerut, Rajendra Singh Solanki from Gautambudhnagar, Satendra Jain Solly from Firozabad, Kuldeep Bhadauria from Kanpur, Rajesh Kumar Dwivedi from Akbarpur (Kanpur), Suresh Chandra Gautam from Jalaun, Sarika Singh Baghel from Etawah (SC), Ram Niwas Sharma from Fatehpur Sikri, Puja Amrohi from Agra (SC), Hembabu Dhangar from Hathras (SC) and Kamal Kant Upamanyu from Mathura.
Sarika Singh Baghel had become the youngest women MP in 2009 Lok Sabha elections which she contested from Hathras on RLD’s ticket. She has been associated with both the Samajwadi Party and the BJP before being named as the BSP candidate from the Etawah seat which is reserved for SCs. Another women candidate, Puja Amrohi is the daughter of prominent Congress leader Satya Behan, who was also the Rajya Sabha member from UP.
Meanwhile, Kuldeep Bhadauria and Satendra Jain Solly will be contesting their first-ever elections on BSP’s ticket. The party’s Jalaun candidate, Suresh Chandra Gautam has been the party’s coordinator for Jhansi division. He had worked with BSP founder Kanshiram as well and was the BAMCEF coordinator in 1989. He retired from the government job as an engineer in 2022 and was made the party’s coordinator for Chitrakoot and Jhansi.
The party’s Hathras candidate, Hembabu Dhangar, is the son of Jagdish Prasad Dhangar, one of the founder members of the party. Kamal Kant Upamanyu, candidate from Mathura, has also been with the party for long.
