Renowned filmmaker David Lynch, celebrated for his visionary works like
Mulholland Drive
and
Blue Velvet
, and revered for his unique portrayal of American life, has passed away at the age of 78.
“It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch,” read a statement on his official Facebook page.
“There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us.
But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.'”
Last August, David Lynch revealed his battle with emphysema, describing severe breathing challenges. By November, he candidly shared how the condition impacted his daily life, saying, “I can hardly walk across a room. It feels like having a plastic bag around your head.”
David Lynch carved a unique path in American cinema, evolving from an art student creating experimental shorts to a celebrated filmmaker. His surreal debut, Eraserhead, gained cult status, followed by acclaimed works like Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, and Mulholland Drive. Lynch also created the iconic TV series Twin Peaks. He earned three Oscar nominations for Best Director and received an honorary Oscar in 2019. Lynch won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1990 for Wild at Heart.
