The festival of colours, Holi, marks the arrival of spring. This year, Holi will be celebrated on March 25, 2024 (Monday) as per the Hindu calendar. And a day ahead of Holi, is celebrated as “Choti Holi”, also called “
Holika Dahan
” by many Hindu across the world. It is a significant festival as per the
Hindu mythology
, and it symbolises the
victory of good over evil
.
On Choti Holi, people get together around bonfires, known as “Holika Dahan”, which are lit after sunset. These bonfires symbolically represent the victory of good over evil, and commemorate the legend of
Prahlad and Holika
. As per the Hindu mythology, Prahlad was a big devotee of
Lord Vishnu
. And so, when his evil father, King Hiranyakashipu, along with his aunt Holika tried to kill him by burning him in a bonfire, Prahlad was protected and saved by Lord Vishnu. Instead, it was Holika who perished in the flames while Prahlad emerged unscathed, thus signifying the victory of righteousness.
Thus, the rituals of Holika Dahan include chanting of prayers and hymns, and performing traditional dances around the fire, having delicacies and more. It symbolizes the cleansing of impurities and the renewal of life and spirit.
