Imphal, Nov 20 (IANS) The Manipur government has closed all schools in six valley districts on Wednesday considering the safety of the students, officials said on Tuesday.
On November 28, 2024, the Manipur government issued a directive announcing the reopening of schools and colleges across the state. This decision came after two weeks of closures due to a curfew imposed in response to escalating ethnic violence in the region.
According to the official notice, schools in Manipur, including government, government-aided, private, and central institutions, are scheduled to resume normal classes starting from November 29, 2024 (Friday). Zonal Education Officers under the Department of Education-Schools were instructed to inform the relevant authorities in their areas and take necessary actions. The decision was made with the approval of the government, following the Home Department’s instructions issued on November 28, 2024. Students and teachers can check the official notice regarding the school reopening as provided here.
Initial School Reopening Announcement
Earlier, on November 24, 2024, officials had announced that schools and colleges in the Imphal Valley and Jiribam district would reopen after being closed for nearly a week. These closures were a result of prohibitory orders imposed due to rising violence in the region, which affected districts including Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Kakching, and Jiribam. The closures had initially begun on November 16 and were expected to last until November 23.
Revocation of the Earlier Reopening Decision
However, a new directive issued late Sunday evening from the Directorate of Education (Schools) revoked the earlier reopening decision. The revised notice confirmed that the resumption of classes for all schools—government, private, government-aided, and central institutions—would not happen as initially planned. Instead, the notice stated that schools in the affected valley districts would remain closed on November 25 and 26, with colleges in these areas also instructed to stay closed.
Amid these developments, authorities decided to ease the curfew restrictions in the valley. Residents were permitted to purchase essential goods between 5 a.m. and 12 p.m., according to district administration guidelines. This shift in plans came after a week of heightened tensions. Despite the initial expectation for the reopening of schools, the government opted to prioritize safety, especially as no significant incidents had been reported recently. Consequently, daytime curfew restrictions were relaxed to enable residents to manage essential needs while ensuring public safety.
