Pharma giant MSD has severed ties with an agency involved in Poonam Pandey’s publicity stunt. MSD, the Indian affiliate of the US drug giant Merck, terminated its association with Schbang, a creative marketing solutions agency. The termination follows Schbang’s involvement in a controversial publicity stunt by model and influencer Poonam Pandey, who recently faked her own death to raise awareness about cervical cancer. Pandey’s stunt received widespread criticism for its insensitivity towards patients facing such a life-threatening condition. Schbang admitted to carrying out the stunt in collaboration with Pandey and media outlet Hauterfly, issuing an apology. Despite the apology, MSD decided to sever ties with Schbang due to a conflict of interest. MSD sells Gardasil vaccine against some strains of the human papillomavirus that causes cervical cancer. MSD clarified that the PR activity by Pandey and Schbang was not associated with them in any way. Social media posts initially alleged MSD’s involvement in the publicity stunt, prompting MSD to take action. Take a look at the video.
