NEW DELHI: In a significant development for

Jamia Millia Islamia

(JMI), the Hon’ble President of India, in her capacity as the Visitor of the university, has approved the appointment of

Prof. Mohammad Shakeel

as the

Officiating Vice-Chancellor

. This decision, made under the powers vested in her by the JMI Act of 1988, designates Prof. Shakeel to serve until a regular Vice-Chancellor assumes office.
Prof.

Mohammad Shakeel, currently the senior-most Professor in the university’s Department of Civil Engineering, officially assumed the role of Officiating Vice-Chancellor on May 22, 2024. His academic journey includes earning his B.Tech. and M.Tech. degrees from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and a Ph.D. from the University of Roorkee. He has been associated with JMI since November 1986, starting as a Lecturer and progressing to Reader and then Professor in subsequent years.
Throughout his tenure, Prof. Shakeel has demonstrated extensive expertise in teaching and research. He has held various administrative roles including Dean of the Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Controller of Examinations, Director of the Centre for Distance & Online Education, and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering. His contributions extend to serving on numerous key university committees, reflecting his deep commitment to JMI’s academic and administrative development.
This appointment is expected to provide continuity and leadership during the transitional phase until a permanent Vice-Chancellor is appointed. Prof. Shakeel’s vast experience and dedication to JMI’s mission are poised to further enhance the university’s academic excellence and administrative efficiency.
