R Madhavan: I try to test directors on set

R Madhavan

recently disclosed the ‘tricks’ he employs with directors, emphasizing his preference for screen tests. However, his motive isn’t to demonstrate his suitability for a role; instead, he cleverly uses it to gauge whether the directors truly understand their craft.
In an interview with Film Companion, Madhavan said that he doesn’t demarcate between a debutante director or an experienced one, because he understands that a good subject is very difficult to come by.

He added that the only thing you want to see is the preparedness of the set and the intent behind the project.

The actor also revealed that he always tries to test the directors to see if they’re in line with what they’re saying. He insists on a screen test, and it’s with the belief that they want to see if he fits the character. More importantly, he is checking out whether they’re good enough directors for him. According to him, he is actually auditioning them.
