Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha: Is it a bank holiday today for the Ram Mandir inauguration; know the details here

Ayodhya Ram Mandir inauguration: Today, on January 22, as the Ayodhya Ram Mandir is inaugurated, some banks across the country are closed for the day while others are observing half-days. Here’s an overview of the bank holiday situation on this day.
State government and educational institutions closure
According to an ET report, several state governments have granted a day off to their offices and educational institutions in honour of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir inauguration.

However, the nature of the holiday varies from state to state.
Central government offices and PSU banks

As per the PIB release dated January 19, in alignment with the celebrations, Central Government Offices, Central Institutions, and Central Industrial Establishments throughout India will observe a half-day closure until 2:30 PM today. This decision is intended to allow employees to participate in the Ram Lalla Pran Pratishtha ceremony.

Bank holiday classifications
The RBI categorises bank holidays into three types: those under the Negotiable Instruments Act, those under the Negotiable Instruments Act with Real-Time Gross Settlement Holidays, and those involving Banks’ Closing of Accounts.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) publishes the list of bank holidays. It’s important to note that the RBI communicates its holiday schedule to banks and financial institutions through official channels, including its website.
Private banks’ hours on January 22
Bank branches of private banks in Uttar Pradesh will be closed today (January 22). The RBI has recently updated its bank holiday matrix, specifying that all banks, both Public Sector Units (PSU) and private, in Uttar Pradesh and Goa will be closed for the entire day. Some private banks in Uttarakhand are also affected by this closure.

Leading banks such as HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank told ET that their branches in Uttar Pradesh will be closed on this day. Additionally, HDFC Bank branches will be shut in Maharashtra and Uttarakhand.
The reason for this closure is attributed to the consecration ceremony of Lord Shri Ram in the temple built at Shri Ram Janmabhoomi. As per the RBI Bank holiday list, this event has prompted the closure of banks in Uttar Pradesh. In Manipal, banks will also be closed on the occasion of Moinu Iratpa.
Exchanging Rs 2,000 notes at the RBI
The RBI has announced that the facility to exchange or deposit Rs 2,000 banknotes will not be available at any of its 19 Issue Offices today (January 22) due to the half-day closure mandated by the Government of India. Normal operations will resume on Tuesday, January 23.
Upcoming bank holidays
Looking ahead, banks are set to experience an extended weekend with Republic Day falling on January 26, followed by a second Saturday and Sunday. Additionally, on January 23, banks in Manipur will remain closed for Gaan-Ngai, and on January 25, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh will observe a holiday for Thai Poosam/Birthday of Md. Hazarat Ali.
