The ongoing maritime dispute between the US and Russia has escalated following the land conflict with Ukraine. Russian media reports that the US has claimed over 1 million square kilometers in the Arctic and Bering Sea, labeling the area as strategically important maritime territory. The US Department of State’s “Extended Continental Shelf” project, announced in December 2023, has triggered Russia’s rejection, leading to diplomatic tensions. Moscow delivered a note expressing its refusal to the US claims on the Extended Continental Shelf (ECS) through bilateral channels. According to international maritime law, UNCLOS permits maritime claims of up to 200 nautical miles from shore in oceans. Maps published by the State Department depict US territorial claims in six areas, including the Arctic and the Bering Sea, with the Arctic claim extending up to 680 nautical miles beyond the 200-mile line. This dispute underscores the complexities of territorial sovereignty and resource management in critical maritime regions.
