Types of storytelling

The art of storytelling is not one that should be underestimated. Storytellers practice and perfect the art of weaving together words, voices and gestures to captivate the audience through the perfect stories. Here we list some storytelling techniques that you should know about.



Originating from Persia, Dastangoi is the art of oral storytelling. The storyteller, known as a Dastango, narrates tales often from the Arabian Nights and uses simple language, hands and face gestures to captivate the audience.


Nested loop

In storytelling, a nested loop is a technique where a story unfolds within a story. It adds layers to the story, creating depth and intrigue in the audience. Each nested story contributes to the main plot or essence of the story.



The Panchatantra form of stories and storytelling belongs to the Indian culture of fables. Each story provides listeners and readers with moral lessons through animal characters and tales that were passed down through generations.



Also known as the Hero’s Journey, the Monomyth is a story style where the hero or ‘main character’ of the story has to leave his home, embark on adventures, face challenges and ultimately undergo transformation, before he emerges victorious.



Harikatha is a traditional form of storytelling in India, often performed in a musical style. The ‘Kathakaar’ narrates and sings devotional stories, bhajans and stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata.

False start

The ‘false start’ technique, as evident by the name, is one where the story begins with an unexpected event or statement, only to later reveal that it was misleading. This technique grabs the audience’s attention and adds an element of surprise.



Puppetry is a storytelling method that uses puppets as characters and has a musical story which is acted by them. Puppetry is famous across cultures and brings stories to life in a unique way. As the puppets sway their hands and legs, the stories are brought to life.


The mountain

A storytelling technique very similar to its name is the ‘Mountain’. Just like a mountain’s topsy turvy terrain, the mountain technique involves presenting highs and lows in the story to keep the audience engaged.
