At the end of each year some of the most prominent dictionaries come up with their ‘Word of the Year’. It is the word that became famous in the past year, and has been used extensively by people. And two words, ‘Demure’ and ‘Manifest’ have already been clenched.

Cambridge Dictionary announces first

The first Word of the Year 2024 came from Cambridge Dictionary and they picked ‘Manifest’ as the word of prominence.

What does it mean

The word ‘Manifest’ basically means to attract the things you wish to in life. Manifestation is a part of the Law of Attraction, and helps people manifest their goals and dreams to reality.

Why did it become famous?

The word just feels so relatable to people all over the world right now. Everyone wishes to manifest their goals and dreams, and turn their desires to reality. And so, to manifest is the way to go.

How did it come into play?

Although manifest is a fairly old word, it came to the limelight with some TikTok and Instagram content. The mottos of ‘Manifest the good stuff’ and ‘There is power in manifestation’ became famous, and so did the word.

After Cambridge, Dictionary.com titled the word ‘Demure’ as their Word of the Year 2024.

What does it mean?

Demure is the word used to show and convey that someone is elegant, quiet, and modest in their behaviour. Being demure is like a trait that people have.

How did it become famous?

Demure too became famous through social media with reels that had background music of ‘Very demure, very mindful’. It was used to describe elegant and simple things and behaviours in people.

A thought in fashion

Demure also is used to describe elegant, flowing dresses, subtle colours, and men and women who carry those outfits exceptionally well.

The word from Collins

For the year 2024, Collins dictionary has announced the word ‘Brat’ as the Word of the Year. According to their website, ‘Brat’ is someone who is “characterized by a confident, independent, and hedonistic attitude”.

How did it become famous?

While the word ‘Brat’ was in use for quite some time and was spoken widely too, it became particularly famous after the release of a music album by Charli XCX.

Macquarie Dictionary’s announcement

For the year 2024, Macquarie Dictionary has a rather unique and distinct selection for their ‘Word of the Year’. They have announced ‘Enshittification’ as the Word of the Year 2024.

What does it mean?

According to Macquarie Dictionary, the word is used to define “the gradual deterioration of a service or product brought about by a reduction in the quality of service provided, especially of an online platform, and as a consequence of profit-seeking.”
