US Coast Guard finds no recoverable oil sheen off Huntington Beach

NEW DELHI: The US Coast Guard announced on Saturday that they did not find any remaining

recoverable oil sheen

during their morning overflight off the coast of

Huntington Beach

, California. This comes after a sheen, estimated to be 2.5 miles long and 0.5 miles wide, was discovered when a

Coast Guard helicopter

flew over the site at sunrise. The agency is currently

investigating

the cause of the sheen.

Tar balls

were also found along the

shoreline

in Huntington Beach, and onshore recovery teams will assess the shoreline and remove them as necessary, according to the Coast Guard. The source of the sheen has yet to be determined.
In a separate incident on Friday, Beta Offshore reported a potential spill of

produced water

from an offshore platform off Huntington Beach. However, the Coast Guard stated that they do not believe this spill and the sheen are related.
Amplify Energy, the parent company of Beta Offshore, has stated that they have no indication that the sheen is connected to their operations.
This is not the first time an oil spill has occurred off the coast of Huntington Beach. In 2021, an underwater pipeline leak caused the release of approximately 588 barrels of oil.
